Résumé : |
The present work concerns a detailed study of the electro-optical behavior of systems based on methacrylic polymer (HEMA) and a nematic liquid crystal. PDLCs (Polymer Dispersed Liquids Crystals) are produced by the phase separation method induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. These composite materials with electro-optical functionality are being considered in a number of optical applications such as controlled transparency glazing. This type of glazing can go from an opaque state (OFF state) to a transparent state (ON state) by simple application of voltage. Some binary systems exhibit relaxation phenomena of the liquid crystal droplets leading to obtaining an optical memory effect after the electric field has been cut. This effect is specific to a type of monomer, which bears on their chemical structures certain functional groups such as the OH and CH3 methacrylic group. This memory effect can be kept for several days or even months. |
